During the festival, people worship Goddess to seek blessing for achieving good education and finally enlightenment in their lives. It also marks the onset of spring season in the country.
The origin of this festival has many tales and claims in India. Many believed that Aryan who came to India through Khyber pass were the first to introduce this festival. In that period, most of the civilization took place near the bank of River Saraswati due to fertile land and abundant water to cultivate for crops. To honor the contribution of river, they started worshipping and pray for good harvest during the river.
Another legend states, Kalidasa was married to a beautiful Princess by trickery but upon discovering his foolishness, she kicked him out of the palace. He was totally disheartened and determined to commit suicide in Saraswati River by drowning himself. But, when he was about to get drowned Goddess Saraswati appeared and blessed to make him wisest man of that time. This is why Vasant Panchami is celebrated with special worship to Goddess Saraswati and sought her blessing.
In India, it is considered an ideal occasion for beginning the education of children. The schools around the country start from this season to attend the class during this period. In fact, the children are taught their first letter after performing a special ritual to Goddess Saraswati. Students in schools, colleges, and university perform Saraswati puja to seek blessing to succeed academically. People even donate books and other literary material to the poor. Food is offered to Brahmins or sages besides organizing a puja on this day in northern India.
The dominant color used in the festival is yellow as fields remain covered with mustard flowers. Even the sweets distributed during the ritual are yellow in hue. During this festival, children and adult fly kites to celebrate this occasion. Apart from that common people pray to Goddess to remove their ignorance and leads to enlightenment.
